How UIF Is Calculated
Official UIF formula guide: daily income (Y1), Income Replacement Rate (38–60%), credit days and benefit tiers.
Official statutory formula:
- Daily income (Y1) is calculated as
benefitSalary × 12 / 365, with remuneration capped at the statutory ceiling of R17,712 per month. - The Income Replacement Rate (IRR) is determined by
29.2 + (7173.92 / (232.92 + Y1)), sliding between 38% and 60%. - Daily benefit is
Y1 × IRR. - Credit days accumulate at 1 day per 4 completed calendar days of employment up to a maximum of 365 days.
- Tier 1 covers days 1–238 at your sliding IRR; Tier 2 covers remaining days 239–365 at a flat 20%.
Example at ceiling: Monthly salary R17,712 → Daily income Y1 = R582.31 → IRR = 38.0% → Daily benefit = R221.28.
